Where to Stay in Bali: Choosing the Right Area
Choose between Ubud, Uluwatu, Seminyak, Nusa Dua and Sanur by the kind of holiday you want, with practical checks before booking.

Researched October 22, 2026 using tourism-board and property information. This is an area-planning guide, not a report of an on-site stay.
Choose the day you want before choosing the hotel
Start with one question: what would you like to do after breakfast? If the answer is galleries and inland scenery, start with Ubud. If it is a pool with an ocean horizon, look at Uluwatu. If you want dinner choices outside your hotel, put Seminyak on the shortlist. For a resort-led beach break, compare Nusa Dua with the more relaxed coastal setting of Sanur.
For a first trip, our suggested approach is one inland base and one coastal base, rather than moving hotels every other night. This is a planning recommendation: the right split depends on how much time you want to spend at your accommodation.
Bali areas at a glance
| Area | Start here for | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Ubud | Art, culture and an inland stay | Town-centre location versus a retreat outside town |
| Uluwatu | Cliffside villas and ocean views | Beach access, steps and transport |
| Seminyak | Restaurants, shopping and a coastal base | The actual walking route to dinner and the beach |
| Nusa Dua | A holiday built around a resort | Beach conditions and what the room rate includes |
| Sanur | A gentler coastal pace and beach walks | Water conditions at different tides |
These are starting points, not guarantees about every hotel in an area. Compare the exact address and room category before comparing star ratings.
Ubud: for an inland part of the trip
Indonesia’s tourism board identifies Ubud with arts, culture and rice-field landscapes. That makes it a different choice from a beach resort, rather than an interchangeable alternative. Our recommendation is to give it its own part of the itinerary if those interests matter to you.
Decide whether you want to step out into town or stay somewhere more removed. Ask a prospective hotel for its location pin and transport arrangements. A view from the room does not tell you how easily you can leave for dinner. If you have only a few nights, count arrival and departure time before committing to a second hotel.
Uluwatu: distinguish the ocean view from beach access
The important question here is not simply whether a villa overlooks the sea. It is how you get from the villa to the shore, and what you can do when you get there. Alila Villas Uluwatu provides a useful example: its official FAQ describes 663 steps to the beach below and advises that currents and reef conditions make it better for scenery than swimming. That detail changes the decision for anyone expecting easy daily swims.
Ask about steps, vehicle access and the nearest suitable beach before booking a cliffside property. For accommodation options, continue to our Bali cliffside villa guide. Treat the villa and its pool as part of the holiday, rather than assuming every outing will be a short walk.
Seminyak, Nusa Dua or Sanur?
Seminyak combines accommodation with dining and shopping. Indonesia Travel also notes that traffic can become congested. For a stay centred on evenings out, compare the hotel’s actual position against the restaurants you intend to visit. Do not use a district name as proof that everything is walkable.
Nusa Dua is a planned tourism area with hotels and supporting facilities. Our recommendation is to shortlist it when the resort itself is the main attraction. Compare the pool, beach access, meal arrangements and room layout together; a cheaper room can be the less useful choice if it requires paying separately for the parts of the holiday you wanted.
Sanur’s coastal walking area and quieter atmosphere offer another approach. It is worth comparing if a morning walk appeals more than a late night out. Check local sea and tide conditions for your dates rather than assuming that a calm-looking photograph guarantees swimming conditions.
A suggested first-trip split
For a seven-night stay, consider three nights in Ubud and four at one coastal base. This is our suggested structure, not a fixed itinerary. Choose Uluwatu for a villa-led finish, Seminyak for evenings out, or Nusa Dua or Sanur for a more beach-focused stay.
Write down your two essential experiences before choosing the order. Then request realistic transfer estimates for your arrival time and allow a margin on departure day. Avoid building an itinerary around optimistic driving times found in an old guide.
Five questions to send before paying
- What is the exact room or villa category, and which photographs show it?
- Is the pool private to that accommodation or shared?
- What is the route to the beach, including steps?
- Which meals and transfers are included in this rate?
- What cancellation conditions apply to these dates?
Explore our Bali guides once you have chosen your base. Narrowing the area first makes the accommodation search much more useful.
