Where to Stay in Santorini: Areas, Views and Hotel Access

Compare Fira, Oia and other Santorini bases, with the questions to ask about caldera views, steps, family policies and transport.

Researched October 22, 2026 using tourism, transport and hotel sources. Recommendations below are planning judgments, not claims of a firsthand hotel stay.

Decide whether the view or the location comes first

A Santorini hotel search becomes easier once you separate three wishes: a caldera view from your room, convenient access to a village, and time beside the beach. A property can meet one of those wishes beautifully without meeting the others.

Our starting recommendation is Fira for travellers organising several outings by public bus, Oia for those who want to focus their stay around that village, and an Imerovigli shortlist for travellers comparing caldera-facing accommodation. If beach days are the main point of the trip, compare beach-side areas such as Kamari and Perissa before paying a premium for a cliff setting.

Compare the areas by the holiday you want

AreaWhy shortlist itQuestion to resolve
FiraA practical base for bus connectionsHow far is the room from the bus stop and drop-off?
OiaA stay focused on Oia’s village and settingIs the hotel in the village or outside it?
ImerovigliComparing accommodation around the calderaWhich view does the booked room actually have?
FirostefaniAnother location to include in a caldera shortlistIs the walking route suitable for your group?
Kamari or PerissaA beach-led alternative to a cliff stayHow will you reach your planned village visits?

This is a decision framework rather than a ranking of every neighbourhood. The exact hotel and room can matter more than the area label.

Fira: start here if you plan to use buses

The local operator, KTEL Santorini, lists routes from Fira to destinations including Oia, Imerovigli, Kamari, Perissa and the airport. That makes Fira a useful first shortlist for a trip involving several parts of the island. Consult the operator’s current timetable for your travel dates; do not build a late arrival around a remembered summer service.

Compare the route from the bus stop to the property, especially with luggage. For an early flight or ferry, ask the hotel to explain the transfer plan separately. The best arrival arrangement may differ from how you explore during the rest of the stay.

Oia: read beyond the postal address

A hotel with Oia in its address is not necessarily a room directly on the village’s caldera edge. Two official property descriptions illustrate the distinction. Canaves Epitome describes a location outside the centre, a shuttle to Oia and Ammoudi, and buildings that are not set directly into the cliffside. Domes Novos lists its location as Tholos Oia.

Neither arrangement is inherently a disadvantage. Our advice is to decide whether you want to walk straight out into the village or would prefer a hotel where you plan transport for those visits. Ask for a location pin and the shuttle’s actual operating arrangements for your dates.

The photograph at the top of this guide shows Domes Novos specifically; it should not be read as a photograph of a caldera-facing room in Oia.

Caldera view, sea view and sunset view are different promises

Before paying for a view, ask the property to identify what you will see from the booked room and terrace. A sea-facing photograph alone cannot answer whether the room faces the caldera, whether the sunset is visible, or whether people on a nearby path can see into the pool.

Request photographs of the exact room category and a description of privacy from neighbouring terraces. If swimming is important, check the pool’s dimensions, whether it is heated during your stay, and whether it is a plunge pool rather than a pool intended for lengths. These questions are more revealing than the word “luxury”.

Travelling with children or limited mobility

Check the individual property, not just the destination. Canaves’ published policies welcome all ages at Epitome while its named cliffside properties have an older-child restriction. Epitome also explicitly asks guests to discuss accessibility needs directly. Domes Novos says it has accessible facilities, but that statement alone does not establish that every room meets a particular need.

Ask for the step count and route from the vehicle drop-off to reception, the room, breakfast and pool. For a family, confirm the room’s occupancy and pool arrangements in writing. A general family-friendly label cannot replace checking the accommodation you will actually occupy.

Our booking sequence

  1. Choose your priority: village access, room view or beach time.
  2. Shortlist two areas and no more than a few properties in each.
  3. Compare exact rooms, access and transport before comparing rates.
  4. Check the full amount and cancellation conditions for your dates.

Then use our Santorini travel guide to plan the rest of the visit, or browse the Santorini collection.
