Bali

Five-star villas, private tours, spa retreats and fine dining on the Island of the Gods, with the Uluwatu cliff belt at its centre.

Bali's luxury market has concentrated itself along one geological feature: the limestone bluff that runs from Jimbaran south around the Bukit Peninsula to Uluwatu. A hundred metres of drop to the Indian Ocean is what buys the uninterrupted sunset, the sea breeze and the seclusion, and it is why the island's most expensive addresses are all within a few kilometres of one another.

Away from the cliffs the calculation changes. Jungle retreats around Ubud trade the horizon for river gorges and rice terraces; the east and north coasts are quieter and considerably cheaper. But for the archetypal Bali stay — a private pool that appears to end in open water — the cliff belt is the answer.
